lines, dots, lines
[approx 7:20]. for percussion trio. dec 2008

score
Performed at SFU Student Composers Concert, Dec 2008.

My inspiration for this piece came from the exploration of the continuum between long, continuous gestures and short, pointilistic clusters. Thus, the piece begins with the idea of the “line” – the stable, held gesture – which develops into “dots”, only to re-fuse into the “line”, as “dots” are placed closer and closer together.
Metaphors of contraction and expansion, within individual parts and in the relation of one part to the others, are used in order to explore this continuum and aid the fluidity of transition between the two extremes. The individual instrumental parts should be looked at as parts of a single whole, unified by principles of cause and effect as well as an overall homogenous density curve.
